Fruit of Character

Fruit of Our Character

The first passage we will delve into is the one most often associated with the Fruit of the Spirit.  This particular fruit is what defines our character.

Part 1 of teaching is here.

Part 2 is here

How Can I Apply This

We have a contrast in this passage between the fruit of the flesh and the fruit of the Spirit.  We will see what needs to be avoided as opposed to what needs to be cherished and cultivated.

Believers who desire victory over the flesh surrender to the Holy Spirit.

As we learn the character traits of the fruit of the Spirit, we should practice them diligently and repetitively. Fruit of the Spirit comes from God and it is through God we receive grace and mercy.

Colossians 1:6

We are joined to the Vine through faith and it is through faith we have union with Him.  The character of the fruit we bear shows the world what He is like.  Being branches of the Vine, we need the Vine to even exist.  The Vine wants us to bear His fruit. Each plant produces its own kind of fruit.  With Christ as the Vine and us as the branches, we bear the fruit Christ bears in us.

When we do not yield to the Spirit’s control, we bear tasteless, unappetizing fruit.  When we do yield, we overcome the worldly desires and bear fruit consistent with God’s character.  That fruit is living and abundant and Christ’s character is exhibited through us.

Branches that bear good fruit are pruned back to be stronger, more resilient, and better able to bear good, tasty fruit.  The life-giving resources of the Vine are then focused on the fruit, not just the branches.

The purpose of bearing fruit:

· an expression of Christ being in us,

· evidence of discipleship and growing in Christ,

· to bless other people,

· and most importantly, to bring glory to God.

Fruit is the silent, natural, restful produce of our inner lives.  When good works come as the fruit of the indwelling Spirit, they are acceptable to God.
